CHAPTER FOUR

I DON’T KNOW WHY IT was so clear to me.

The thing about vampires is that for the most part, they look perfectly human. It’s not like they have pointed ears or red eyes or other obvious signs of their true nature. Even when they speak it isn’t always obvious because most can retract their fangs at will. But for some reason, it was as clear as a glass of water that this guy was a bloodsucker. Maybe that was a result of being bitten. Or maybe some of the blood they transfused into me was vampire blood.

I hated vampires. But if what this one said was true, I owed him my life.

The universe has a bizarre sense of humor.

“I don’t remember anything after I was bitten,” I said. “Am I going to turn into a vampire now?”

My rescuer shook his head. “For someone who heads up the NYPPD, you’re shockingly ill-informed.”

That pissed me off and I heard one of the machines I was tethered to start beeping. I took a calming breath and the sound stopped.

“The Albanian meant to kill you,” he said, “not transform you.”

“You recognized the Albanian?” I said.

“We all recognized the Albanian. It was a matter of self-preservation.”

I did not miss his use of past tense and filed that bit of information away. My unit had identified the hitman as a person of interest in half a dozen murders over the last year, but they’d all targeted humans. I’d heard rumors he killed rival vampires for Tiago but had never been able to prove it. But maybe this guy knew something I didn’t.

“What did he do to me?”

“He was draining you.”

“But you came along.”

“Yes,” he said.

“And stopped him.”

“Yes,” he said again.

I thought about that for a minute while I tried to figure out how to frame my next question without it being too offensive. “Is he dead?”

The vampire nodded his head.

“How?”

“He didn’t see me as a threat,” he said. “And he was busy with you.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

“It will suffice for now.”

That answer annoyed me no end. In fact, this guy was really starting to piss me off. “I can haul you in for questioning,” I said, but we both knew that was a toothless threat.

“Your questions will be answered in good time,” he said, “but for right now, you need to heal.”

He turned to go, leaving me frustrated and angry and conflicted. “Wait,” I said, and he turned with his hand on the door handle. “What’s your name?”

He smirked a little then. “Albert.”

“Thank you Albert.”

“It was not my choice,” he said. “But you have friends in high places, and I am bound to serve.” And with that cryptic announcement, he was out the door.

What. The. Hell?
